Centre for Migration Studies

Within the framework of the MO4R project, the Centre for Migration Studies was established under the leadership of Dr. Senada Šelo Šabić. The core project team within the Centre includes, alongside its leader, Dr. Emina Bužinikić and Ana Vučemilović-Grgić. At present, the Centre consolidates existing research themes and projects in the field of migration and lays the groundwork for their future development. Currently, the Centre is implementing the Endure project, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation.

The establishment of the Centre as a centre of excellence aims to achieve recognition and systematization of migration research and to establish a framework for collaboration with scientists, initiatives, and institutions involved in migration related issues. Topics of focus include the status of foreign workers and the challenges of their integration, border regimes and security issues, the role of local communities in developing cultural policies and integration practices for working with refugees and migrants, the media representation of migrants’ positions and Croatian citizens’ perceptions towards migrations, among others.

The Centre conducts and develops migration studies with the goal of contributing to public debate and raising awareness within Croatian society of the various aspects of migration’s impact on the country’s development. Central to the analysis and development of integration models and future immigration strategies are the policies governing education, health, employment, culture, local development, and climate change adaptation.

Through scientific and applied research, the Centre for Migration Studies is focused on the development and creation of new knowledge as well as the application of knowledge in the interest of the development of the Republic of Croatia. The Centre collaborates with both domestic and foreign scientists and institutions, especially within the European context. The Centre will promote cooperation and activities of young scientists and will offer a space for their development.
