Centre for Migration Studies (CEMIS)
As part of the MO4R project, the Centre for Migration Studies (CEMIS) was established under the leadership of Dr. Senada Šelo Šabić, with key contributions from Dr. Emina Bužinkić and Ana Vučemilović-Grgić. The Centre serves as a hub for consolidating and advancing research in migration studies, enhancing the institutional capacity of the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO) in this field. By integrating existing research initiatives, CEMIS provides a foundation for further scholarly inquiry into migration-related themes.
CEMIS is currently engaged in the Endure project, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, which focuses on vulnerable groups, particularly refugees. As a center of excellence, CEMIS aims to systematize migration research within IRMO and foster interdisciplinary collaboration with national and international researchers and institutions. Its research agenda includes analyzing the legal and socio-economic status of foreign workers, the education of refugee children, and the role of local communities in migrant and refugee integration.
Beyond its empirical research, CEMIS actively contributes to broader academic and policy discussions on migration in Croatia and the European Union. A key aspect of its work is examining the intersections between migration, development, and EU foreign policy. The Centre’s research prioritizes integration strategies across multiple domains, including education, healthcare, employment, culture, local development, and climate change adaptation.
CEMIS collaborates extensively with scholars, policymakers, and civil society organizations in Croatia and beyond. Additionally, it is committed to nurturing the next generation of migration researchers by offering young scholars opportunities for professional growth and active engagement in research projects.
