The Role of Greenland in Arctic Security: Greenland’s Allure

The May 2026 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Lea Fabić, examines Greenland’s growing importance in Arctic security amid rising global interest in the mineral-rich island. Greenland’s strategic significance has increased as climate change reshapes the Arctic, opening new economic opportunities and making the island an attractive partner for major powers. Beyond its geostrategic location, Greenland is also becoming a focal point of great-power competition due to its substantial rare earth and critical mineral deposits. Although the EU has often overlooked Greenland and the wider Arctic, exclusion from the island would represent a major geostrategic setback, limiting European access to critical raw materials essential for resilient and secure supply chains.
