On April 3, 2025, Emina Bužinkić, PhD, participated in the panel Global Upheavals, Local Struggles: European and Western Balkan Responses to Geopolitical Turmoil held at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna. The event gathered leading scholars and practitioners to discuss how Europe – and particularly the Western Balkans – is navigating the intensifying global instability, economic uncertainty, and environmental crises. The panel explored democratic resilience, governance, and socio-economic strategies for peripheral and semi-peripheral states in times of profound change.

Dr. Bužinkić contributed with insights from the perspective of European peripheries, highlighting the growing insecurities faced by communities amidst the expanding securitization and militarization industries. She highlighted the need to critically examine how extractive models of governance and border control deepen inequalities and restrict possibilities for just transitions.
