The International Scientific Conference, themed “Sustainable Development for a Sustainable Future,” was held on 9-10 October 2025. It was held in Skopje, North Macedonia, in hybrid form. The conference aimed to explore cutting-edge microeconomic and macroeconomic solutions that foster sustainability while ensuring economic resilience, growth, and inclusivity.

IRMO Research Assistant Ana Vučemilović Grgić presented the research titled From Coal to CBAM: Assessing Vulnerability in the Western Balkans’ Transition to the EU Green Economy co-authored by Research Assistant Leona Knežević Mužić. This research examines how the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will affect trade competitiveness and industrial employment in the Western Balkans. It looks at how exposed key sectors like steel, cement, and electricity are, and through the concept of development leakage, it argues for equitable climate governance and transitional support to prevent CBAM from deepening inequality or hindering EU accession.

Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO) is one of the co-organizers of the conference along with the Institute of Economics – Skopje, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia; Institute of Economic Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia, and National Institute for Economic Research “Costin C. Kiriţescu”, Bucharest, Romania.
