IRMO scientist Dr. Senada Šelo Šabić and IRMO research assistant Ana Vučemilović-Grgić have published a book chapter entitled “Democratic Backsliding in Croatia – Autocratic Tendencies Die Hard” in the volume Democratic Backsliding in Europe. The book was published by Nomos, and it analyses the political causes, mechanisms, and consequences of democratic backsliding in 15 European countries. In addition to country case studies, the volume provides comparative analyses that identify recurring patterns of democratic erosion.
The chapter by two IRMO authors examines the roots of democratic backsliding in Croatia, showing how entrenched informal governance networks and a dominant party system continue to undermine democratic institutions. The chapter analyses how key oversight bodies have been weakened through legal, political, and administrative pressure. Finally, it highlights the role of domestic resistance actors in upholding democracy.
