EU Enlargement as a Question of Identity and Political Responsibility

Feb 26, 2026 | News

Within the Becoming EU-ropean project, Dr Senada Šelo Šabić delivered a webinar addressing the Croatian perspective on EU enlargement, focusing on its transformative and identity-related dimensions.

The lecture emphasised that enlargement goes beyond institutional alignment and legal reforms. It is a long-term political process requiring trust-building, responsibility and active engagement in shaping the European project.

The sustainability of the Union depends on internal cohesion, value consistency and the ability of both Member States and candidate countries to cultivate a sense of shared political belonging.

The discussion addressed the future resilience of the EU, the relationship between geopolitics and values, and the long-term viability of enlargement in an increasingly unstable global environment.
