From 6 to 7 May 2026, Brussels hosted several events organised by the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), including the international workshop “The Future of Energy Security in the EU and the 2040 Climate Target” and the General Assembly of the joint programme Clean Energy Transition for Sustainable Society (e3s).
As part of the public programme, Ana-Maria Boromisa (IRMO) participated as a panellist in a roundtable discussion on different national approaches to energy security. In addition to Croatia, examples from Cyprus, Finland, Italy and Norway were presented. The discussion focused on how different energy and climate scenarios could influence the future of EU energy security.
Participants highlighted the importance of strengthening the resilience of energy systems, diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on external suppliers, particularly in the context of geopolitical challenges and energy supply disruptions. The workshop took place in the context of the EU’s 2040 climate target, which foresees a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels and requires a profound transformation of the European energy system.
During the closed session for EERA members, a foresight exercise was conducted to explore possible developments of Europe’s energy system up to 2040. Participants identified key drivers and uncertainties and developed plausible energy security scenarios, assessing their potential implications for achieving the EU’s 2040 climate target.
At the General Assembly, IRMO was confirmed as an invited (associate) member of EERA and will participate in the joint programme Clean Energy Transition for Sustainable Society (e3s).
